What it does not cover matters just as much: normal wear items worn out on schedule, damage from a different failure, or problems you were warned about in writing and declined to fix. A fair shop documents that boundary up front instead of discovering it when you come back unhappy.

Parts vs labor: the half warranty trick
Here is the oldest trick in the drawer. The part carries a fine manufacturer warranty, sometimes lifetime, and the shop advertises that loudly. On a transmission or compressor job, labor is most of the bill, and you pay most of the bill again.

When the problem returns, go back to the original shop first, describe the symptom, and let them verify it is the same failure. Do not let a second shop repair it first, because that usually voids the original shop’s obligation.
Be on time, be specific, and be reasonable about cause. A fair shop will put the car on a lift and show you what failed. If they honor the claim without a fight, you have found a keeper. If they stall, ask for the refusal in writing: that sentence has a way of changing minds.

Watch for these five. A car repair warranty that exists only verbally. A parts-only warranty on a labor-heavy job. A term under 90 days on a repair over $500. Conditions requiring every future service at that same shop, which is a leash, not a warranty. And a used or customer-supplied part installed with no labor coverage at all, which a shop should disclose loudly before the work, not after. The common ones: letting another shop rework the repair first, damage from an unrelated failure or accident, racing or commercial use exclusions, and skipping required maintenance related to the repair. Ordinary driving does not void anything, and a shop that hunts for excuses on a clean claim is telling you who they are.
Is a lifetime brake pad warranty worth anything?
Less than it sounds. Lifetime usually covers the pads only, and pads are the cheap half of a $130 to $320 per axle job. When you claim it, you pay labor, and often the rotors too. It is a customer-retention tool, not a gift. Judge the shop on its parts and labor term instead.
Does a shop warranty follow the car or the customer?
Read the invoice, because it varies. Most independent shop warranties are written to the customer and the vehicle together and do not transfer when you sell. Some national chain warranties do follow the car. If you are buying a used car with recent receipts, call the shop and ask whether the coverage survives the sale.
